Make time for Daddy

He had told her to buy a new outfit. This had actually translated into going to the spa, getting a manicure, having her hair trimmed and done, new shoes...the whole works. And none of it was her idea.

She knows he'll want to see the finished product, but she's been putting it off as long as she can, holing up in her room quietly, and avoiding the servants. It won't last forever, and she knows it. This is why the new dress, hose and shoes are all readily available. All it will take is the summons.

She is not looking forward to it.

"But..." She's rapidly running out of arguments, especially under his gaze. "...they aren't even Jewish."

"Lorna..." The moment comes where he has to decide if he can garner her agreement faster with the truth or a lie.

"Your mother was not Jewish, Crystal was not, I would be happier if he was or that we had found you someone that was that could bring the peace. But he is the lynchpin and it must be him."

"Child do you think it makes me happy to ask you to do this?"

She lowers her eyes as she slowly sits on a concrete garden bench.

"...no..."

"I too have married not for love but for peace and the family. I wish I could give you something more but this is what must be."

Her eyes fill some, but she'd be hard pressed to explain why tears make an appearance. Could be fear, could be sadness...could be both. She's not sure. All she knows is that she's feeling very alone.

She nods slightly, but won't look up at him.

"Wh-when will I..."

She can't bring herself to finish the question.

"Soon." There are a few details to iron out. "Be ready to meet him."

She gives another small nod, her fingers quickly wiping at just under her eyes.

"Yes, Daddy."

They knew. Crystal and Pietro. I'd lay money on it. They all probably know.

He smiles at her and doesn't draw attention to the fact he knows she's crying.

"I love you my daughter, and I am so proud of you."

She has many more questions, so she clearns her throat to pull it together. She gives her eyes another quick wipe then looks up at him, almost pleading with him with her eyes.

"What are the plans for us...after we're m-married?"

She almost doesn't want to know the answer.
